Meizu M5c overviewMeizu M5c (Blue Charm 5c) is the cheapest smartphone from the new company ranges. It went on sale in June 2017. A year earlier Meizu M3s was released, and in 2015 — Meizu M2 mini. The fact is that these three smartphones are just incredibly similar, which frustrates customers — It is only Apple which can afford to produce almost identical gadgets. But the M5c is still the most relevant option, and we are going to talk about it. The smartphone is cheap. The material is plastic, the hardware is a chip from MediaTek, and there is no fingerprint scanner. However the display, camera and battery are good. Add a quality assembly and you will get one of the best budget smartphones 2017/2018. Meizu M5c is a real "workhorse" for those who do not need anything extra in the smartphone. The gadget under this name was released for the international market, and in China it can be found under the name Blue Charm 5c. The smartphone is available in black, gold, pink, blue and red colours. There are no differences between them, except for design.
Chinese manufacturers like to sell similar gadgets, changing the firmware and adding new minor functions. But Meizu now has as many as three practically identical devices! In addition to the most current M5c, it's the M3s and M2 mini or just the M2. Today you can buy any version, so it is necessary to figure out how the models differ from one another. So, in Meizu M5c the hardware has become worse in the following parameters:
- Chip MediaTek MT6737 now has a lower frequency;
- A 8 megapixel camera with a f/2.0 aperture — its predecessors had 13 megapixels and f/2.2;
- Video quality is 720p — the predecessors had 1080p;
- Battery capacity is for 3000 mAh — the M3s has 3020, the M2 mini has 2500.
- Flyme 6 support from the retail software;
- Graphical processor Mali-T720MP1 with better graphics;
- Panorama shooting function;
- Bluetooth 4.1;
- USB OTG for connecting USB flash drives.
The main competitor from Xiaomi received the same screen size and resolution, as well as very similar dimensions. The case is plastic, like one in Meizu. The main differences are in the following points:
- Redmi 4A has Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor, which is clearly more powerful than MediaTek in the M5c;
- Xiaomi has a better main camera, both in photo and video making, which comes here to 1080p;
- Both the speakers and headphones transmit the sound a lot better in Xiaomi Redmi 4A.
Pros of Meizu M5c
A clear display. Good viewing angles and the correct color rendition are particularly pleasing. Brightness might be greater, but it is noticeable only in the bright sunlight;
New firmware. Flyme 6 was released modified and almost without bugs. Design and styles are arguable, but the quality of the shell is good;
Nice design. It is pleasant and familiar since 2015. Developers do not change the winning strategy — there is nothing extra in the smartphone, it looks good and it is comfortable to hold it in the hand;
Quality assembly. Without backlashes and glass falling out on the ground. There are some rejects, but it is an exception — in general, smartphones are made of high quality, although they are made in China;
Affordable price. For 150 USD you get a good quality smartphone, without any inexplicable lags or sudden explosions.
Cons of Meizu M5c
Weak performance. The base and graphics processors are already out of date. They do not support modern games and high-quality video. In comparison even with the last year's Meizu M3s, the hardware has become worse;
Imbalance in applications. On the basis of retail software the smartphone is released with a dozen useless preset programs. They need to be deleted manually. At the same time, there are no basic Google applications by default, including even the Play Store!
Few sensors. It is a budget model, but even a fingerprint scanner was removed from it. It is needless to say about NFC chip for contactless payment. Physical gyroscope is digital here;
Not an ideal battery. According to the developers, the M5c can live for two days and nights. But in practice the maximum is one day and a half, only in case if you use the smartphone during very limited amount of time. Most often you will need to charge it every night.
Design and ergonomics of Meizu M5cIt is clear at first glance that we have already seen this design. And more than once. Meizu M3s and M2 mini described above are almost identical, except that the M3 has more decorative elements on the back cover. The case of M5c is made of plastic, but it is of high quality. It gets dirty very quickly, it collects prints and stains easily, so it's better to buy a cover right away. Stylistically, everything is fine: the smartphone is small, without extra details, but its rounded sides and slightly protruding glass are regarded as advantages. Meizu M5c looks respectable. Ergonomics is also at the high level, you can get used to the smartphone during half an hour. The main elements are the following:
- Front cover/screen. Covered with glass, there is no name in the specifications, but it looks like Dragontrail. The frames are visually slightly wider than ones of the M2 mini. Oleophobic coating is declared. There is the only control button mBack with a chrome border under the screen. There is a telephone speaker, a front camera and a notification sensor above the screen;
- Back cover. Here there is a camera at the top and a flash unit below it. The smartphone and certification marking at the bottom catches your eye, it is another reason to buy a cover;
- Lower edge. Similar to the M3s, there is a USB connector in the centre, there are fixing screws on the sides and closer to the side edges — holes. In the left one a microphone is hidden, in the right one — a speaker;
- Upper edge. It only has a 3.5 mm headphone jack. It is good that Meizu does not take it away;
- Left edge. A tray for nanoSIM-cards and microSD. The needle in the kit is needed just to open it. As usual, you can put either two SIM cards or a SIM card and a memory card;
- Right edge. Closer to the top there is a slightly protruding volume rocker and a lock and reset button. They are the same by touch and differ only in length.
Meizu M5c displayEverything is also almost unchanged here — a diagonal of 5 inches, an IPS matrix, HD resolution of 1280x720. There is an automatic brightness adjustment, but to save energy it's better to set it manually. The lower border goes without any complaints, but on a sunny day the screen brightness is not sometimes enough. You can also adjust the color temperature. This helps to get rid of the problem of the inclination to the coolest shades by default. The viewing angles are impressive, the color fault appears only with very sharp angles. The killer-feature for the display is the GFF technology. In Meizu M5c there is no interlayer between different layers of the screen, that is, it is actually made of a single piece of glass. This greatly reduces glints and splashes of light from reflection. But if the screen breaks down, then you have to change it entirely, and it will be more expensive. Another feature that not everyone likes is the auto-adjustment of the images brightness. Do not confuse it with the screen brightness. This function changes the display depending on the photo format, its color and contrast. You cannot turn it off and sometimes it's annoying.
Meizu M5c cameraThe smartphone is equipped with two cameras: a front and a main one. The front camera has 5 megapixels lens, but without flash and focus. It is suitable only to make selfie, although these photos can be spoiled — if you do not have time to adjust the definition of the image or to light/darken the shot. The Face AE Light Boost technology, as stated, improves the quality of self-portraits, but the difference between this camera and those ones without this feature is small. The rear camera received 8 megapixels and an f/2.0 aperture. There is auto focus and a double flash, but the stabilization is not included. Surprisingly, it takes pictures not worse than its older counterparts with 13 Mp, especially when the light is good. Separately, we should highlight macro photography, it is excellent! Problems appear at dusk and at night — Meizu M5c absolutely cannot cope with the lack of light. In the automatic mode, it simply does not focus, gives a black background or leads to “noise” because of the high ISO. There are a lot of modes:
- Auto — a standard photography, everything is decided by the system;
- Portrait — it focuses on faces;
- Frame-by-frame — a time-lapse, where the camera takes a lot of pictures successively;
- Panorama — it is suitable for landscapes;
- Scanner — it is used for QR codes;
- GIF — it is similar to the time-lapse, but you can make an animation repeat itself several times;
- HDR — it adds more contrast and intense colours to shots, use it more often;
- Manual — you can change parameters, such as exposure, ISO, white balance, contrast, saturation.
Meizu M5c performanceThe M5s processor is one of the weakest ones. MediaTek MT6737 runs on four cores and with a frequency of 1.25 GHz. The graphics chip Mali-T720 also leaves much to be desired. The Qualcomm hardware is now much better than its MediaTek equivalences, and it's Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 that works in Xiaomi Redmi 4A. RAM inside is only 2 GB, memory — 16 GB with the ability to expand due to the SD-card. In fact, from retail software you get 1 GB of RAM and 8-10 GB of storage. As a result, you get a really weak smartphone. You can barely play Mortal Kombat X and World of Tanks with the minimal speed, and even then it can lag. It withstands weaker games well. But the more memory gets clogged, the worse the smartphone works. After a while, hangs and jerks appear even on the main screens. One of the benefits is that the gadget does not overheat too much. After 10 minutes of the CPU test, the upper part around the camera, where the processor is situated, gets warm. The temperature rose to 38 degrees, with 24 degrees being in the room. It is an acceptable indicator.
Meizu M5c softwareThe smartphone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and Flyme 6. The software is tied to the structure. Everything is controlled by swipes, a sensor and a single button. Touch — go back, press — home screen, long press — lock, two presses — camera. Swipes and smart gestures are described in detail in the settings. A new version of Flyme has become a little more minimalist and more functional. Now, for example, you can record video for the screen, edit videos and screenshots, download applications into the cache left. The latter is a useful feature. The system remembers when an application was opened and tries to activate it in advance, so as not to wait for the downloading. Therefore, even despite the weak processor, the M5c works significantly faster than its competitors. As for the software problems, we should mention unnecessary programs. The Chinese like to put all sorts of online stores and advertisements into the smartphone, and it is noticeable in the new Flyme version. There is even a folder with games demos! You can delete almost everything, but it takes time. However, there are no Google services — they have to be installed manually.
Meizu M5c soundYou should not wait for any particular refinements in terms of sound from the budget smartphone. The speaker is quite weak, it doesn’t play high frequencies, there are whistles sometimes. A good thing is that the case is made of plastic. In metal counterparts the quality would be much worse because of the resonance, nevertheless Meizu M5c is not advisable to use without headphones. With the headset it is better. When it is being connected to the smartphone, an equalizer appears, you can adjust the sound. If you listen to music at an average volume, then the quality for such a price is acceptable. Very loud sounds make high frequencies very harsh and some problems with bass sounds appear, so do not turn the volume up to the maximum. Another disadvantage is the only microphone, so there is no noise reduction. By the way, there is no radio either.
Meizu M5c securityThere is no face scanner or retinal sensor in the smartphone. It does not recognize even fingerprints. More expensive counterparts are responsible for all these points, and Meizu M5c only has standard passwords or graphic patterns for unlocking.
Meizu M5c batteryThe battery capacity is 3000 mAh, it is a standard. On average, it lives 24 hours. If you use it actively — to read books, play games, watch videos and make conversations — then the battery will last for a day. If you try, the charging can be delayed for two days. It's in standard mode! For fans of saving there is energy saving mode, and for saving freaks — super-saving mode with only calls and SMS included. Tests results:
- Reading, medium brightness and autoscroll — 14 hours;
- Video via Wi-Fi — 9 hours;
- Games, average settings and brightness — 5.5 hours.
Meizu M5c packing and arrangementAs usual, the Meizu gadget is packed in a small white box with no unnecessary details. There are no headphones, protective glass or other accessories. There is no USB OTG adapter either, although the smartphone supports this function. Inside in different sections there is only a basic kit:
- The smartphone Meizu M5c itself;
- The USB 2.0 cable, it is quite long-lasting;
- Charger for 1.5 A and 5 V;
- SIM card tray needle;
Meizu M5c errors and bugsSurprisingly, users do not find out any serious problems with the smartphone. This is the merit of Meizu — the company has tried to release a new firmware without bugs. Most often, the following inconveniences arise:
- Artifacts in the video. Green squares, blur at the edges of the screen, points, stripes, hangs up to the full refusal to reproduce the movie. This problem is related to hardware. The graphics processor simply cannot cope with high-quality video, and that’s why artifacts appear;
- The name of the caller is not shown. The problem is typical of all Meizu smartphones. Even if the number is in the list of your contacts, the caller’s name may not be displayed — it looks as if a stranger calls. This problem can be solved by changing the the code number (from +1 to 001 for example).
