Overview of OnePlus 6

OnePlus 6 is the newest smartphone produced by OnePlus as of summer 2018. The phablet has a glass case, a large display with an aperture and the aspect ratio of 19:9, top-end hardware based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, a good dual camera, fast charging, NFC. All the main features of flagships are in place. There are some drawbacks, bugs and problems with the case, so OnePlus 6 is not perfect, although it has already become the most popular gadget of the company with a million sales in 22 days. The price starts from 530 USD for the version with the memory of 6/64 GB. Let’s find out whether this new model can compete with A-models from iPhone and Samsung and whether it is worth buying it now.
Among the main Chinese manufacturers of smartphones — Meizu, Xiaomi and OnePlus — the latter is distinguished exclusively by gadgets of the upper segment. Beginning with OnePlus One in April 2014, the brand launches ‘flagship killers’, phablets for demanding customers. The only exception was OnePlus X presented in October 2015 for the budget market. Low demand was regarded as a failure, and it decided to focus on the flagships.
The fifth generation was announced in June 2017 with the release of OnePlus 5, and its development — in November of the same year in the form of OnePlus 5T. The sixth generation began to be sold in May 2018. By the way, you will not be able to find the OnePlus 4 smartphones — this figure was missed because of the widespread among the Chinese tetraphophobia, i.e. the fear of the figure four. For a better comparison of the two most current models, read the detailed review of OnePlus 5T. In short, they do not differ much, but more than OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 5:

  • The case. The new generation has a completely glass case with aluminum frames on the side edges. The previous model also had a metal rear side.
  • The screen. OnePlus 6 got a display with a diagonal of 6.28 inches instead of 6.01 inches and a little higher resolution. The aspect ratio is now 19:9, not 18:9.
  • Hardware. It is a new generation of Snapdragon chip and Adreno graphics processor. Both models have eight cores, but in the sixth model the clock rate is higher. What’s more, this new model has a version with 256 GB of internal memory.
  • Cameras. The dual module in OnePlus 6 is now with optical stabilization and is able to shoot video of 2160p at 60 fps or slow-mo at 480 fps, but with a quality of 720p. The front camera received a larger focal length.
  • Operating system. In the sixth generation, the OxygenOS 5.1.8 shell is preinstalled on Android 8.1 Oreo, whereas the previous model from the box has Android 7.1 Nougat.

The dimensions are almost the same — the sixth model is lower, wider and thicker by half a millimeter. Its weight is more by 15 grams. It almost is not perceived or felt, but covers and films from the fifth generation do not fit it.
Do you need to update? It is hardly worth doing if none of the new features are particularly attractive. OnePlus 5T and even just OnePlus 5 are top-end smartphones with excellent hardware. It makes sense to wait at least when the 6T model is released or even when the next generation appears in 2019.

Pros of OnePlus 6

Display. It is large, juicy and bright, with an ideal black colour transmission, the 19:9 aspect ratio and an ability to switch to the standard 18:9, a number of color modes and settings.
Performance. One of the most powerful chips on the market allows you to work without lags, to do any tasks and to play the heaviest 3D games on ultra settings.
The operating system. A new version of OxygenOS based on Android Oreo with almost clean interface, gestures control, a set of custom styles and settings.
Quick charge. Branded accessories charge up to 60% during 35 minutes, up to 100% — during one hour and a half. It is a little worse than its predecessor, but on average, it is still excellent on the market.

Cons of OnePlus 6

Sound. One main speaker does not give the necessary volume and depth of sound in movies, games and music. In landscape page orientation it is closed by hand and works even worse.
Design. Smartphones OnePlus lost their uniqueness which was in the first models. The 6T model with a glass at the back gets very dirty, can easily slip out of the hands without a cover and can crack even without falling down.
Not the best battery. With active use the gadget lives one working day, which is clearly not enough compared to 36-48 hours in its competitors.
The absence of flagship features. There is no guaranteed water protection, wireless charging, stereo speakers, memory card slot, infrared port.

Design and ergonomics of OnePlus 6

In its design, OnePlus 6 is similar to both the 5 and 5T models: there are the same smoothed corners, smooth edges and a fingerprint scanner on the rear panel. But, unlike its predecessors, it is now also made of glass, like the front side as well. Between the Gorilla Glass 5 glass there are metal edges on the sides. Wireless charging, for which the glass case is made, is not here. There is no water protection according to the IP standard either. The case is sealed and watertight, but the manufacturer does not give any guarantees, so you should not swim with OnePlus 6.
The smartphone is available in three colors: matte black, glossy black and glossy white. The models in red colour and with the Marvel Avengers Limited Edition design with a metallic color, the golden logo of the Avengers from behind and a steep and cool cover of the Iron Man in the set were sold in limited numbers. A matte option looks simple, but practical — fingerprints are almost invisible here. The glossy case slips more and gets dirty, so the cover is useful.
The arrangement of the elements has changed compared to OnePlus 5T:

  • The front side. The screen with a fashionable aperture in the center, where the front camera, a speaker, a news sensor and lighting / proximity sensors are installed. There are no physical buttons here.
  • The rear side. At the top in the center are two main camera modules, one under the other. The flash is situated lower, and under it — an oval fingerprint scanner similar to a button in OnePlus 3T.
  • The right edge. A power button and a physical sound mode selector are situated there.
  • The left edge. A volume rocker and a tray for two SIM cards are situated there. There is still no support for memory cards.
  • The lower edge. USB is in the center, a speaker is behind the bars on the left, a microphone and a 3.5 mm headphone jack are on the right.
  • The upper edge. There is only a microphone reducing the noise here. There is no infrared port.
Case color options
The ergonomics of OnePlus 5T does not differ — it is comfortable to hold the smartphone in the hand, although the glossy case can slide. It is inconvenient to touch the top edge because of the screen size. The multimedia speaker is not situated in the best way because in the horizontal orientation it is easy to close it with your hand and muffle the sound. The scanner on the rear panel could be a little bigger — you do not get to it right away, it takes time to get used to it.

OnePlus 6 display

The Optic AMOLED matrix is exactly the same as in OnePlus 5T. The difference is only in the screen size — 6.28 inches — and in the resolution — 1080x2280 pixels, which is by 120 pixels more than in its predecessor due to the aspect ratio. 19:9 looks no longer as familiar as 18:9. The reason is in the fringe-shape aperture on the top, like in iPhone X. If you do not like it at all, you can turn on black bars on the sides of the aperture in the settings so that it will not be noticeable. This is a separate advantage of Optic AMOLED — the matrix shows a black colour perfectly because of the disconnection of pixels, rather than colouring. Unoptimized games and videos automatically hide the fringe.
From its predecessors OnePlus 6 has received a number of display modes with different saturation and temperature:

  • Standard.
  • Adaptive.
  • sRGB.
  • DCI-P3.
  • For users.

The standard mode by default offers better saturation, and sRGB and DCI-P3 give more accurate color reproduction without oversaturation. In addition, you can always adjust the white balance and brightness. In addition to color modes, there are also working ones: a completely black background, a night mode with a weakened blue color, a black and white theme for reading and the battery saving. Always On Display, as in the fifth model, is limited. It means that the screen in this mode is not active permanently, but only when you take the phone in your hands or receive notifications.

Always on Display
Coverage in the standard mode is much wider than the natural one Coverage in sRGB mode is closer to the natural one

OnePlus 6 camera

OnePlus does follow a rule of two identical modules of the main camera. The upper one is at 16 Mp and with optical stabilization, the lower one is at 20 Mp. The size of the former — 1/2.6", of the latter — 1/2.8". Here the differences end. The cameras have the same focal length of 27 mm and an aperture of f/1.7. There is a dual flash, a double optical zoom and a bokeh effect with a background blur. As for the settings: there are automatic, manual, panoramic, time-lapse, HDR modes. The latter is better to use carefully, when standard modes cannot cope with the task.
Daytime shooting is excellent, everything is in order with white balance, sharpness and dynamic range. In the twilight and at night, there appears oversharpness and noise, but overall the quality remains to be at a good level. Zoom also spoils the quality and kills details, and the bokeh effect does not always accurately distinguish objects and can blur the foreground. The sixth model shoots better than its predecessor, but still cannot compete with top-end models from iPhone, Samsung or Google. The main complaints — to the same focal lengths. The second module-TV would be better.

The front camera is designed for 16 megapixel with the f/2.0 aperture. It takes perfect selfies in different lighting conditions, Details and color rendition are without any complaints.
Video is also better than in OnePlus 5T due to stabilization. Now you can shoot 4K at 30-60 fps, and in slow-moe mode — 720p at 480 fps.

OnePlus 6 performance

With the hardware based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, with eight 2.8 GHz and 1.7 GHz cores, the Adreno 630 graphics processor and a 6/8 GB RAM, it was impossible not to call the smartphone the best one. And it has become the best. By benchmark tests, OnePlus 6 outperforms every model in performance. There is also enough internal memory — there are versions of 64, 128 and 256 GB. As for the two latter, the absence of a memory card slot is not so noticeable. The smartphone supports NFC, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB-C 2.0.

What does this mean in practice? OnePlus 6 flies. All games are played on maxima with the best fps score: Asphalt 8 is at 30 fps on average, PUBG — 40, Modern Combat — 5 and World of Tanks Blitz — 60. There are no lags and crashes. Multitasking in applications, tabs in the browser, camera operation, video watching — the smartphone copes with everything. With heavy loads the case is heated, and the system can trottle, but it is not very critical. The smartphone power reserve will last for two or three years.

OnePlus 6 software

The smartphone runs on the native OnePlus shell called OxygenOS, version 5.1.8. The base is Android 8.1 Oreo. If you want, you can already install test versions based on Android P, but they are still in the process of development.
Stable global firmware OxygenOS is one of the best among its Chinese counterparts. The interface is similar to pure Android, but with wider settings, branded icons and widgets, new features. For example, there is a splitting of the screen into two windows and a separate desktop with recent applications on the left. The on-screen and physical buttons are also customizable, they can be assigned different functions. The shell supports gestures from Android P:
  • A swipe up on the right — go back.
  • A swipe up in other zones — exit to the home screen.
  • A swipe up with your finger holding — recently launched applications.
  • Double tap on the dark screen — activation.
Regular updates are also an advantage, they fix bugs and software errors. Thanks to the Project Treble system, new firmwares are downloaded and unpacked in the background, so at this time you can work with your smartphone. To install it, you will only need to reboot the gadget.

OnePlus 6 sound

Another drawback inherited from OnePlus 5T is just one speaker closed with a bar and improperly installed. It means that it gives already a muffled sound, and in games and films a user usually closes it with his/her hand and sound becomes even more muffled. There is no second speaker for stereo. There are no complaints to loudness, but the boundary frequencies are not good: at the high frequency the speaker crackles, and low frequencies are slightly distinguished at all.
In headphones, the situation is better. The sound is not perfect, but it is more powerful and louder than through the speaker. You can connect usual headphones via mini-jack and wireless ones via Bluetooth. The benefit — there are more settings.
A speaker and microphone used for conversations, unlike multimedia, are excellent. They catch the sound right up to the whisper, cope with noise reduction.
Headphone settings

OnePlus 6 protection and security

It is standard for modern phablets. There is a fingerprint scanner on the rear panel under the cameras and a flash. It is flattened, not round, unlike previous models, and is a bit smaller in size. Because of this your finger does not immediately reach it, it is necessary to get used to it. The scanner detects fingerprints quickly, although sometimes — rarely — it may not respond several times in a row. In addition to unlocking, you can assign to this zone the control of the camera or of the display curtain.
Face recognition is available from the box, it's also called Face Unlock. For activation, it is enough to wake the screen with a button or double tap, and then the front camera will find the owner by itself. You do not even need to bring it directly to your face — the device sees under big angles. The sensor works in poor lighting conditions. It is a bit strange that in some smartphones Face Unlock makes errors and reacts to the owner's photo. But it is not possible to mislead OnePlus 5T with a photo.

OnePlus 6 battery

The battery is the same as one in the predecessor, it is designed for 3300 mAh. But the battery life became worse — because of the enlarged screen. 100% charge is enough for 7 hours of active screen with standard tasks: half an hour of playing games, an hour of watching video, web surfing, messengers. In this mode, the battery lasts for a working day, at the end of which the charge level is 10-15%. Energy saving will give another half a day, but the smartphone will not withstand 48 hours of work if you really use it and not just carry it with you. The result is worse than that in OnePlus 5T, almost in all tasks, except for games, where the best optimization of battery consumption has an effect.
The smartphone supports Dash Charge. From the 5V/4A adapter it is charged during one hour and a half, while up to 96% — during 1 hour and 15 minutes. The main emphasis is on the rapid recovery of the first percent — up to 60% is got in just 35 minutes. There is no wireless charging.

Packaging and arrangement of OnePlus 6

The box and package are almost identical to OnePlus 5T. The packaging is large, made of cardboard, in the red and white traditional colors of the brand. There is a smartphone on the top, under the second cover — accessories:
  • A charging adapter.
  • A USB/USB-C cable.
  • A needle for removing the SIM tray.
  • A transparent case.
  • A guide.

In addition to the silicone cover, the manufacturer immediately attached a protective film to the OnePlus 6 display. Both accessories are of high quality, you can immediately use them and do not spend money on protection. But there are no headphones, even despite the left mini-jack.

In the ‘Avengers’ version developed for China and India, the box looks more stylish and of higher quality. Instead of a simple silicone bumper inside, there is one of the best in its design cases inside in the form of an Iron Man mask, stickers and an icon of a random Avenger.

Errors and bugs of OnePlus 6

Since OnePlus 6 is the company's newest smartphone, it has not managed to fix all the bugs yet. But the example of OnePlus 5T which received a number of updates and now works almost without errors gives some hope. There is only one problem with the case and the assembly. Without any cause, the rear glass cover breaks and creaks. Models and colors can be different, but the place is always the same — near the volume rocker. It is likely that it is a production reject.

Bugs and software errors are more common:
  • Misleading of Face Unlock on photo. The smartphone makes errors when recognizing the face and responds to the owner's photo. The reason can be in the use of 2D models, although OnePlus 5T with the same algorithm cannot be deceived.
  • Turning off the sound when using a speakerphone. If you turn on the hands-free mode during a call, the smartphone will go to the silent mode. Returning to the microphone does not help. You can fix it only if you drop the call and call back.
  • A problem with Samsung Gear S3. The wristband does not work in tandem with the smartphone because the application from Samsung is not supported. You can solve the problem by installing an older version of Samsung Pay through APKMirror or updating the application to the next version.
  • Double tap does not work. The smartphone simply does not respond to wake-up by double-tapping, especially if it has not worked for a long time. The problem can be related to the forced optimization of the battery consumption which is configured in the menu.
  • Display bugs. Most often, applications, videos and images conflict with an aperture at the top of the screen. Interface elements overlap or are lost.
  • Camera bugs. Users note problems with autofocus, errors in the panoramic mode operation, too dark areas in slow-mo shooting.

Software bugs can be solved by resetting to the factory settings, you can read the instruction in the next section. The manufacturer is gradually working out many problems with the help of updates, so you should update more often to the current firmware. For example, the OxygenOS 5.1.7 version fixed the bootloader vulnerability. Everyone could connect the smartphone to the PC and start the bootloader mode, and then install malware.

The next updates promise to increase the maximum volume of the speaker, improve the autofocus of the main camera, return the battery icon with percentage indication, add DND mode on schedule and a portrait mode for the front camera.

Recommendations for using OnePlus 6

You should follow the obvious, but important tips: upgrade to the newest stable firmware, use official applications, check all the settings for a full understanding of the functions. If you purchase a Chinese version, be ready to get root, turn on the bootloader and reflash everything manually. If you just need a smartphone for general purposes, then buy an international version. It is updated by the air, supports Google applications out of the box, knows not only Chinese and English languages, but will also definitely work with local cellular networks.

Everything is clear with updates, but what to do if they do not help? You can reset to the factory settings. It is not a guarantee, but it can save you from some problems. Do not forget to save the files on the other device before the resetting because the system will be cleared. Hard Reset is available through the ‘Reset Settings’ in the ‘Restore and Reset’ menu. You can also do this with the phone turned off:

  • Press simultaneously + the volume and power buttons.
  • Release the buttons after the Recovery logo.
  • Choose a language with a rocker and confirm with power.
  • Select Wipe — Erase everything and confirm.
Let’s also deal with the screen aperture setting. Many users do not like fringe, but not everyone knows that it is easy to remove it. It is enough to go to the ‘Screen’ — ‘Display aperture’ and select ‘Hide aperture area’. The second button returns this zone.

If current firmwares seem to be boring, you can install the beta version of Android P. Only experienced users are recommended to do it because the system is still in development and has many bugs. You can download and learn about the differences at the official website.
And a small tip in the end. Go to the built-in calculator and enter "1+=". Just try to do it.
